Fort Stanton, New Mexico

The claim: currently being used as a youth detention facility approximately 35 miles north of Ruidoso, New Mexico.

What it really is: Fort Stanton is neither used as a youth detention facility, nor is it north of Ruidoso. It's actually south-east of Ruidoso.

The fort is now an historical site, and is no longer used by the military, although it was used at one time to intern German POWs.

Currently it is a popular site for military reenactments and recreational horse riding.

  1. Look at any New Mexico map and anyone can see that Ft. Stanton is northwest of Ruidoso, not southeast. Does that 180 degree mistake put any info. from this website at a loss of credibility? Could be, could be.
