Camp Atterbury, Indiana

The claim: Facility is converted to hold prisoners and boasts two active compounds presently configured for minumum security detainees. Located just west of Interstate 65 near Edinburgh, south of Indianapolis.

What it really is: It's a national guard training base, and despite the claims, there is actually very little there, and nothing that looks like two active compounds to hold prisoners in.

  1. Your right it is a Training Base, but your incorrect it is not just a National Guard Training Base. Active duty personnel are trained there from 12 different states and even several foreign countries. Also there is a great deal there at the base it is a major facility with US Army, US Marine and US Air Force facilities on it as well as Naval Seal Unit and Army Reserve and Indiana National Guard Facilities and Units. The base is part of the Atterburg-Muscatatuk Training Site. It is one of the nations major Urban Anti Terrorist Training Sites. In addition it also has a Aerial Target Range for numerous US Air Force - National Guard and other components west of the Mississippi to train aerial bombing and strafing runs. And incidentally it does have a mock POW Camp and a former Medium Security Prison on Post.

  2. It is not a former prison, it is still active and I know people that have done time there. It is an Indiana state prison for low level minimum security offenders. I have been on the base several times myself and everything else the previous commenter said is accurate. The prison is for indiana state and has to relation to the army or federal government, except the land it sits on.

The Edinburgh Correctional Facility is located in Edinburgh Indiana on Camp Atterbury and was founded in 1991. Edinburgh is a minimum security facility that houses 320 offenders. They have approximately 44 work crews supporting Camp Atterbury and other community and state agencies. With these partnerships they save the taxpayers of Indiana thousands of dollars every year.
